leaving on a jetplane

It’s hard to believe, but in exactly one week, I’ll be on a plane home to see my family. WAHOO! This is the longest I’ve gone without seeing them, so I’m looking forward to almost a month Stateside to reconnect with my nearest and dearest.

The one part I’m not psyched about? Over 24 hours of travel time. Specifically, the food and yoga part. So I’m calling on the collective wisdom of you wonderful folks.

I hate airport security restrictions–namely the 3 oz. liquid rule. As a girl who chugs roughly fifteen times that amount in green smoothie goodness daily (ok, ok, on days that I’m doing the green smoothie thing), I’m a little nervous about all the stress on my body without all the jam packed green monster nutrition. In lieu of that, I’m thinking trail mix, homemade granola, and, of course, chopped fruits and veggies. Do you have any other suggestions for gluten-free, vegan, low- or no-sugar plane-friendly food? Favorite trail mix or granola recipes would be greatly appreciated, too! The two current leaders are Averie’s and Jamie’s. Any to add?

The yoga part might be a bit more difficult. With that much time sitting in uber-compact spaces, I’m going to be eager to stretch and twist every chance I get. Of course, planes aren’t exactly asana friendly, and I’m not about to put my hands down or stretch out on an airport floor. What poses or sequences would you suggest for heavy travel? Do you have any podcasts or websites to recommend?

My long travel days are nothing like yours (I live in Washington, DC and fly to Europe to visit my family) – I usually fly out around 5pm, so that morning I have a huge green smoothie, and then at lunch have steamed greens and soem avocado. Basically, I save all my carby proteiny stuff for the trip that night. I relied on raw almonds, raw cashews, cut up veggies and a couple of apples, a hummus sandwich (on FoodforLife Brown Rice flour bread) and products from Go Raw – I like the gingersnaps especially for travel: http://www.goraw.com/categories/Super_Chips_Super_Cookies

I would say that as long as you get your green smoothies in the days leading up to the trip, and the days after the trip, you will be fine going without green nutrition for 24 hours :)

I realize most of my recs are going to be easier for your trip back to Korea, but another option (since I know you have access to things like beans pastes similar to miso, and maybe even miso itself) is to make a batch of this recipe: http://justbento.com/handbook/johbisai/miso-tahini-and-nut-paste

I ate that paste on everything in the month of january – on carrots as recommended, but also on slices of butternut squash and sweet potatoes. They pack incredibly well. Additionally, the paste on its own is very filling, so spreading some on rice crackers woudl work well for a long flight. The only reason I did not take my own advice and some of this paste and some broiled veggies to go for the trip is that I had literally spent the month leading up to the trip feasting on this recipe, so needed a break.

I can’t remember if you can have it or not but what about bringing Green Vibrence with you? It comes in little travel packets and you could mix it with water while on the plane. It doesn’t taste great but it is a good sub for your green shakes… since 24 hours sounds brutal!

Thanks for the shout out Olivia! I just got back from a trip and traveled with the following: Brown rice cakes, almond butter, Mary Gone Crackers, dried fruit (sulfur free of course), cut up radishes, carrots, and celery, and for a bit of protein, roasted garbanzo beans (they keep so well). I looked like I was going on a picnic…on a plane! It was great though and so comforting to know I didn’t have to rely on the airport or the airline for food. Enjoy!

What about Amazing Grass? I’ve never tried it, but it’s a powder and you can just mix it with the water they give you on the plane. Green on the go!

This won’t help your for the plane ride here but I will have a delicious treat that you can take with you for the plane ride back. It’s going to have to be a surprise b/c you would salivate just reading about it. You will love it.
