One of the many amazing recommendations we got for our visit to Kyoto was to visit the Fushimi Inari-taisha, famous for its countless orange gates. When we first arrived at this famous Shinto shrine, we didn’t know quite what to expect. We had absolutely no idea just how extensive the grounds–and the gates–were. As it turns out, hiking the whole complex can take hours (and believe me, with hills like that, it’s a hike), so we didn’t see them all, but I think we got a pretty good sense of the place. Some of my favorite pictures are below. And remember: scroll past those first two and the big gap that follows. (On a side note, if anyone knows how to fix that, and/or how to fix the lousy auto-cropping on these pictures, please let me know!)

The Swedish Christmas post is on hold because I just haven’t had the energy to go to the store to get what I need. Instead, I am starting to post the long-overdue pictures from our trip to Japan for the late September/early October Chuseok vacation. For this first installment, I give you one of the absolute highlights of the trip, our visit to monkey mountain. (Not the official name, clearly, but what I like to call it.)
